Are your students telling you what they are learning in math class?

Every day students reflect on their learning at the end of class.  They spend a few moments writing a brief narrative about something they learned in class followed by giving an example.  Research shows that when students spend a few minutes thinking about and putting into words what they learned that day, it helps with planting that knowledge into their long-term memory.

The next time you ask, "What did you do in school today?" your student should be able to tell you specifically something he or she learned in math class!

our student's long term success in math depends on their mastery of multiplication and division facts from memory!  Please practice those facts with your student.
Rather than spending money on buying flash cards, have your child make their own!   Focus on those facts they do not know from memory.

Although we will be using calculators at various times throughout the year you should know, calculators are NOT permitted on the calculation portion of the SOL test.  Students are expected to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions, decimals, and whole numbers using only pencil and paper.  Review of their multiplication as well as division facts will help them be better prepared for both the SOL as well as daily work in math class.
